Life of a Saltine
a mostly true story . . .
Best. Season. Ever. ~by Miss Peri Berntsen
“Don’t you just love…fall? It makes me want to shop for back to school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”
Fall is pretty much the best time of year. Ever.
As I walked out of my apartment this afternoon I noticed that for the first time, in a long time, it wasn’t 700 bajillion degrees outside. Ahhh, at last. As I listened to the leaves crunching under my feet, I smiled. After living in the Midwest for 7 years, where the autumn season lasts for basically a week (if you’re lucky), I’ve been anxiously awaiting this time of year. To me, fall is baseball, Halloween, boots, snuggly blankets, new school supplies, apple picking…and fresh starts. Like I said. Best. Season. Ever.
Just a few weeks ago I celebrated the Jewish New Year with my family. During this holiday we talk all about rebirth and renewal, and bettering ourselves for the year to come. Letting go of past hurt, and making amends with others. I love this holiday. I always feel ready to take on the world after it; anxious to make changes and start something new. I’ve never understood the logic behind celebrating New Years in January. Seriously. Nothing about that time of year makes you feel motivated or energized. Its dark and cold, and no one wants to leave their house. Why not celebrate during a time when the light is golden and pretty and the air is fresh and clean. When you feel like a kid on the first day of school—ready for all a new and exciting year has to offer.
Well folks, Salt got this one right. Last month Salt celebrated our one-year anniversary. As we embark on the next year of our salty journey, it seems only fitting that this is the time of year to do so.
So, lets open up the windows and let that crisp fall air in, recharge our batteries with that golden solar energy, and get ready for the most exciting season to come.
