Life of a Saltine
a mostly true story . . .
Our bro Joey pontificates from the field …
Did you think we only moved that fast around the patio??
There was serious action at the Stazio ballfields Monday night as the Salt Softball team took the field for only the second time… and third time immediately after! That’s right, a double header of epic proportions. We took the field against a primed Stepdads team that just finished one of two games on the night. Their bats were warm and immediately went HOT rocking rookie pitcher (Me) for 8 first inning runs! Salt came out tentative in the field as well, but settled in nicely on the backs of some great team effort. We managed to put together a 6 run inning on offense while stellar defense kept the opposition quiet through the middle innings. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough as we couldn’t find the late game rally we needed. Play of the day I would have to give to Dan the Man on 3rd base with his unorthodox but timely diving third base tag…that’s right, he tagged the bag.
Immediately following this tough loss, we all slugged back our half full beers and hustled over to the other field for game 2. This time we were warmed up and ready to crush! The ump was tough on both pitchers keeping the strike zone tight. Our Salty Sally’s in the crowd were busy painting their nails or something when Mike Getch made a Sportscenter worthy play of the week at shortstop; seriously this kid’s a vacuum. Salt Grillmaster Brian got to make his debut in game 2, which saw him sliding all over right field in his van skate shoes but making plays nonetheless(buy some cleats kid). This one was a nail biter but we rallied around Getchy’s emotional speech, “bring it in guys!” he was emphatic… “we’re better than these guys…that last team may be better than us, but we’re better than these guys, let’s get some hits!” A huge inning followed, but the game wasn’t over. In our last at bat, base hits by the middle order (Kurtis, Joey, Dan, and Joyce) gave us the lead and nobody will forget the insurance run scored by an absolute PERFECT slide home by our Bambino, Mr. Mike Joyce! You may have seen his speed on the patio, but you should see his wheels around those bases! By this time, our Ladies of the Salt were finally cheering their faces off while perfecting their S-A-L-T cheer. It did, however, take a few moments for the Kitchen Queen, Bianca, to figure out how to make an S with her arms and legs; nice work B! We followed with an almost 1-2-3 defensive half to end the game and clinch the 15-13 victory! Plays of the day definitely go to Getchy’s run saving, full lay out, diving grab at short and Mike Joyce’s strawberry bruise inducing, textbook slide home(hope you got some ice on it bro).
That brings the Salt record to 2-1 with 7 more games to follow! We’ll be out at Stazio every Monday drinking beers, kicking butt, and gettin’ Salty!
